Black Bear2650 Highway 9 West, North Myrtle Beach, SC
Black Bear Golf Club, located in Longs, recently earned a ranking of 8.0 from player/reviewers at Myrtle Beach Golf Insider, earning special recognition for the quality of its staff and course conditions, especially its pro shot and attendant staff.
Designed by Tom Jackson, Black Bear opened in 1989 as Myrtle West. It was renamed and updated in 2001. More improvements came in 2006, when the putting surfaces were regrassed with Champion Bermuda, one of the most durable and heat-tolerant grasses used on greens.
Black Bear is a rare resort/public golf course in that it is completely unencumbered by houses or condos, which tend to make one feel claustrophobic on other golf courses in the Myrtle Beach area. It measures some 6,787 yards from the longest of four sets of tees, a standard par-72 golf course with ten par fours, four par threes and four par fives. There are 23 lakes strewn about the golf course, with water coming into play on all but four holes. Its par fours vary greatly in length, from the 353-yard 14th to the 454-yard 17th, ensuring that players will use most every club in their bags over the course of a round. The signature hole is the 533-yard 18th a straightaway hole where players looking to reach the green in two will need to carry a lake and avoid two greenside bunkers as well.
Black Bear also has a full-service pro shop and practice facility with a grass driving range, putting green and chipping green with a practice bunker.
